Message from the Mayor of Barnsley
Dear friends,
Welcome to the Barnsley Schwäbisch Gmünd Twin Town Society page. It is a pleasure to share a few words with you all.
Town twinning plays an important role in building friendship, understanding and cooperation between our communities.
For more than 55 years, the partnership between Barnsley and Schwäbisch Gmünd has continued to grow, creating cultural, educational and social exchanges that have enriched lives and formed lasting friendships on both sides.
I am proud of the enduring partnership our towns have shared since officially becoming twinned in 1971.
This special relationship is one to celebrate, strengthen and pass on to future generations.
The Town Hall proudly displays the large city crest, reflecting this valued and lasting connection.
As Mayor of Barnsley for 2026/27, I am committed to keeping this valued friendship vibrant throughout my year in office and look forward to seeing the bond between our communities continue to flourish.
I send my very best wishes to Mayor Arnold and the people of Schwäbisch Gmünd.
May our friendship continue to grow and bring even more opportunities for collaboration in the years ahead.
With warmest regards and friendship.

Councillor Liam James Hardcastle
Mayor of Barnsley 2026 /27
